WKSU will hold its 21st annual Hunger Challenge – the day the station highlights hunger insecurity in Northeast Ohio – on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The Hunger Challenge was founded to raise money for WKSU and build awareness of the opportunities to reduce food insecurity in Ohio. Representatives from area food banks will go on air to discuss their work and hunger in the region. The Hunger Challenge offers WKSU contributors the option to choose “meals not mugs” as their thank-you gift in support of the effort to reduce hunger.

This year’s food bank partners are the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and 911�Թ�’s Campus Kitchen.

“For more than two decades, WKSU has dedicated a day of fundraising for the station as a public service event showcasing Ohio’s efforts to reduce hunger,” says Wendy Turner, executive director and general manager of WKSU. “As a community resource with a large geographic footprint, WKSU can shine the light on those who are making a difference in our region.” 

“One in seven individuals in our service area is food insecure,” says Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “This number rises to more than one in five when we are talking about children. WKSU’s Hunger Challenge allows the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the other food banks to highlight hunger solutions we are all working toward. We are glad to once again participate in this event.”

Local organizations sponsoring the Hunger Challenge include Diebold Nixdorf, Dominion Energy, SARTA, People’s Bank, Pine Tree Barn and Wayside Furniture.
